1:1 SEN TA role
In terms of 1:1 support a physiotherapist would provide training and the LSAs in class know the pupil well and are trained in his physiotherapy and moving and handling needs. Nurses would take care of his feeding needs. He would require the following support:
- Collecting from his transport on a morning and taking back to transport at the end of the day.
- Support in class to stay engaged on the learning activities assigned.
- Support in class to use is talker.
- Personal care (would be with another adult)
- Carrying out his physiotherapy programme. Moving and handling would be done with another member of staff.
- Recording in his home school diary. This would include the personal care changes he has had, position changes and the things he has done throughout the day.
Information about the pupil
He turns 14 in April. He has a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE). The pupil has a visual impairment, hypermetropia and has reduced vision. He has a gastrostomy, is totally tube-fed and has gastro-oesophageal reflux.
The pupil uses a Talker and iPad to communicate. He can recognise a wide range of symbols, phrases and words on both devices to construct 1, 2 and 3 part sentences. The pupil can use them to say ‘I want…’ ‘I am feeling….’ ‘turn, up, down, stop, yes and no’. He is now beginning to recognise ‘you’ and use it in his sentences.
The pupil enjoys listening to stories and participating in a range of activities connected to the story. He will engage in the story and can use his Talker to answer literal questions by looking at the illustrations.
The pupil has multiple and complex physical needs and his cerebral palsy affects all four limbs. He does not have independent functional mobility and currently requires assistance with this at all levels.
The pupil is dependent on adults for all mobility, position changes and personal care activities. He uses a wheelchair for all mobilization. The pupil is hoisted for all transfers with support from 2 people.
The pupil is not yet in a toileting routine and needs checking regularly. He needs two adults at least one of them being a consistent trusted familiar adult.
The pupil follows a physiotherapy plan on a daily basis either at school or and at home.
