About the Role
A highly regarded Catholic secondary school in Camberwell, South East London, is seeking an experienced, calm, and patient School Receptionist & Administrator for an immediate start on Wednesday 2nd September 2026.
As the face of the school, you will deliver exceptional customer service, manage front-of-house operations, and handle a busy switchboard with professionalism and poise. This role requires an experienced practitioner who can handle challenging situations independently, as you will be providing sole cover for the reception desk during a planned staff leave period in mid-September.
This is a full-time temporary position for the start of the academic year, with the possibility of long-term or permanent progression for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
* Front of House & Reception: Manage the main reception desk, welcoming visitors, parents, contractors, and pupils in line with school safeguarding procedures.
* Communications & Etiquette: Answer main line telephone calls with exemplary etiquette, directing enquiries accurately and taking clear messages.
* De-escalation & Customer Service: Act as a calm, reassuring, and professional buffer for parent queries, resolving issues at front-of-house and de-escalating concerns effectively.
* Attendance Support: Assist with morning attendance administrative tasks, including contacting parents/carers to chase up pupil absences.
* Written Administration: Draft standard school letters, notifications, and emails using established templates.
* Team Collaboration: Work flexibly within a re-structured office team to support general administrative tasks as required.

* Hours & Contract: Full-time, term-time only (Temporary position; no annual leave permitted during term time)

Requirements (Essentials)
* Experience: Previous administrative or reception experience within an educational setting (secondary preferred).
* Communication: Outstanding telephone manner and written English skills.
* De-escalation Skills: Proven ability to remain composed, empathetic, and professional when dealing with challenging conversations or upset visitors.
* Independence & Initiative: Confident to manage the front desk on a sole-charge basis during peak periods.
* Teamwork: A warm, collaborative approach and a willingness to support colleagues across the wider administrative team.
